The Most Important Thing In SEO

In probably every single prospective client meeting that I have ever had, I get asked, “So, which part of SEO should I spend my time on?”.  It usually stems from them thinking that if they only do part of the SEO equation that their SEO costs won’t be so high.

I hate to break it to you, but when you go and buy a car, you are going to have trouble getting to work if you only try buying the tires and the seats!

Same thing with SEO.  You need to participate in all the various elements of SEO.  Now that isn’t to say that in some case you don’t need to try and satisfy Google’s checklist of 200+ things they look at on each page they index/catalogue; but SEO requires an investment in various resources including time & money.  Of course time IS money so they may end up being one in the same.

If put into a corner on this question, my answer would have to concentrate on building content.  That being said, it doesn’t matter how much content you build if it isn’t quality.  What makes ‘quality’ content?  Well, a large number of factors. If you don’t have a proper internal and external linking strategy, you content won’t be seen by prospective customers.  If your website is very pretty but hasn’t been proper developed from an SEO perspective, than the content in the world won’t allow Google to properly find and index it for your prospective customers.

So… which SEO element is most important?  I think you know!
