Your website is your online advertising starting point

I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I am definitely a fan of the CBC television show Dragon’s Den, and the US version to a lesser extent, the Shark Tank.  Time and time again small business people come onto the show with their great business idea looking for money.  When the Dragon’s ask about their sales numbers, it is shocking to me just how many of them say something like, “we have sold X within Y timeframe with only having a website, no advertising.”

This hurts me every time I hear it.  A properly designed website (containing proper SEO architecture) is your key to online advertising.  A website IS your company’s advertising.

Who are my competitors

I was recently speaking with a business owner who had launched a new website to specifically push accessories in the online space versus their traditional brick and mortar location. When asked who he felt was his competition was, he listed 4-5 businesses within 5-100km of his store’s location. We then went to his computer, typed into Google the name of his best-selling product and got a SERP containing over 380,000 results.

Now there… there is your competition.

But My Website Already Shows At The Top of Google…

Because a number of small and medium sized businesses find their website at the top of the rankings when they type their company name into Google, they feel their website is doing its job.

Really. I’m not joking.

I always tell them that if you type in your company name and your website isn’t 1st or 2nd, you have fundamental problems that require correction immediately. Yesterday preferably.
